DEFENDING THE NATION’S DISTRIBUTED ENERGY RESOURCES FROM CYBER ATTACK
with FoxGuard Solution’s In Depth Strategy for Securing Industrial Control Systems
CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. Tuesday, April 2, 2019 – FoxGuard Solutions, Inc. is engaged and partnered with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) lab, and together will be hosting a demo in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Veterans Affair (VA), Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) showcasing the current status of a DOE Cyber Security for Energy Delivery Systems (CEDS) project which includes technology and solutions that ensure the security and improve the resilience of the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Veterans Affairs (VA)’ Distributed Energy Resource (DER) infrastructure.
MICROGRIDS
Technology tools (software and hardware) allowing for rapid prototyping of deployments at secure DoD and VA facilities. The demonstration project will showcase how an integrated patch and network analytics/management solution can identify (and mitigate) risks to both physical and cyber operations of microgrids.
DISTRIBUTED ENERGY RESOURCE INTEGRATION
Using technology tools funded by the DOE CEDS program, the project team will analyze the architecture of currently deployed DER, identify security patch and vulnerabilities—as well as analyze interactions and responses to cyberthreats. The initiative will enhance the resilience and reliability of energy delivery systems in secure microgrid facilities through proactively addressing potential cyber risks. Tools integrated into this pilot will provide a holistic and comprehensive strategy for cyber secure deployment of DER at DOD facilities, ensuring that cybersecurity at these critical facilities (and additional energy infrastructure sites across the nation) is built in, not bolted on.
CRITICAL ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE
Demonstration projects at secure DoD and VA facilities will show how both microgrids and Distributed Energy Resources at these critical locations can be protected from bad actors by using advanced cybersecurity tools together with simulation, patch management and device monitoring technology.
APPROACH
The project—which will integrate advanced network/patch management tools and an array of simulation and device monitoring technologies developed under the CEDS portfolio—will be carried out in two phases. Phase I demonstration is scheduled for 4.2.2019.
